Men detained after riot

Four people believed to have triggered a riot on Sunday in Chizhou, East China's Anhui Province, were arrested on Monday, according to local newspaper and Xinhua yesterday.

They were accused of attacking a man called Liu Liang and creating a row until the incident developed into a riot, according to a statement from the Chizhou Public Security Bureau.

The arrested people are a 34-year-old owner of Anqing-based Xiehe Hospital, surnamed Wu, and three 22-year-old men surnamed Zhuo, Wang and Li, who are security guards employed by the hospital.

"The incident was quietened down," said an official with the publicity office under the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.

No further comments were available from the local and provincial public security authorities or the local government.

The incident started with a squabble between Liu and the four men because Liu, riding a bike, accidentally collided with Wu's Honda car. This led to some paint being scratched off the car.

Liu was hit and wounded by the four while arguing with them.

When some taxi drivers and other car drivers joined in to help Liu in the argument, the dispute soon escalated.

The four were taken to Jiuhua Road police sub-station. At the same time, a larger group gathered outside the station, waiting for the outcome.

Later the situation got totally out of control when thousands of people gathered, with some of them fighting with the police and destroying the station's facilities. In total, four cars were destroyed and six policemen were beaten and wounded, Xinhua reported.

A supermarket nearby was reportedly looted during the chaos.

He Minxu, vice-governor of Anhui Province and Cui Yadong, director of the Provincial Public Security Bureau, arrived on the site on Sunday night.

The situation was brought under control by 11 pm. Ten people involved in looting and damaging were also detained.
